As Mexico City becomes increasingly urban, new infrastructure poses a threat to the city's biodiversity. In 2019 Mexico City adopted the Green Challenge, pledging to plant more than 15 million trees and plants by the end of 2020 with the aim of combatting urban heat and protecting biodiversity. The program also addressed forest sanitation against invasive insects, implementing new public spaces for citizens, and planting flowering plants for native pollinators. Not only did Mexico City accomplish their goal but the initiative was expanded to continue through 2030 via a transition to the Mexico City Climate Action Program.
